It Begins

hey everyone. this is day ONE of a month long road trip for Brian, Harry and Addie. Its a chance for us to establish the new family dynamic, see parts of the country we wouldn't ordinarily see, and to find a beautiful spot on the Oregon coast to bury the ashes of Rachel, the true strength of the family. Follow us on the trip and leave comments so the kids are sooooo bored on the multi-day drive.

    Can’t wait to see you all in Portland. We are currently in Gunnison, CO visiting Jan’s folks...too bad we couldn’t have coordinated our road trips to get some hikes in together! Love, Chris & Jan

    Harry and Addie -
    Have you started recording license plates yet? You might get all 50 you know. There's a good chance of seeing an Alaska out here, and maybe even an Hawaii, if you are lucky. I've seen a few. Amy and I wanted to let you know we set a date of the 14th ( a Sunday ) to take you two out to Hidden Springs where Anja and Beck live ( Anja and Beck are somehow relations of yours, because of my marriage to Amy, but we can't quite figure that out ) to go swimming. Amy and I will bring dinner to grill ,and some adult beverages, and let you guys swim or whatever. Anja is really looking forward to meeting Addie (she says its rare to meet other kids who READ!). Tell your dad.

    Amy and I will be gone when you arrive in Boise. We are going up to the mountains right before you get here. But, we will be back on Friday the 12th and will show you, and your dad, around the neighborhood. Here are some things you can look up to learn a bit about this place before you get here.     The city just renovated his house and made it a museum. It has some of his work and is well worth a visit if we can. It's only just down the street.

    For Addie and Harry - When you are in Colorado, you'll be in the southern Rocky Mountains. Tell your dad I HIGHLY recommend this route out of Denver - through Conifer and over to Georgetown via Guenella pass. It's paved now. From there down to Empire and over to North Park. Total time Denver to Steamboat - 4 hours, no interstate. When you get here, you 'll be in the Northern Rockies. It'll probably be really, really hot. Here's a little information about the area:

Last day in Tennessee

It was a good day today. We went go to see an re-enactment of Patience Cooper’s colonial life at Sycamore Shoals, where the frontier started (the signing of the Transylvania Treaty, giving the US 3 million more acres). It was very fun 😁. Then we put some of moms ashes in Tennessee next to her dad and grandfather. We went and had lunch in a restaurant called “The Southern Restaurant”. The food was great, but if you ever go down south to eat get tea not sweet tea. It is way too sweet. We later went swimming in a salt pool. That was fun. After that we got to celebrate my moms life in my grandma’s church. It was sad but we know that she would be happy we did it. Tomorrow we are going back on the road and it is going to be a long trip, 9 hour car ride. Much hasn’t happened yet but it has still been a slow start to the trip. But I know as we go on the adventure will increase. -Harry

Look! a Boise Post!

Yes, we know its been a few days since the last post. The kids are pretty wiped out in the evenings, and writing is not on the top of their bedtime lists. So I am writing just to keep the hundreds of you still reading this up to date. We arrived in Boise, Idaho after one night in Ogden, Utah (that is the picture with all the blue sky in it). Boise is hot and dry, baked like a totally chip left on the dash of the car. So we decided the best thing to do was hike in it. Granny J took us up a hilltop on the edge of town (2 miles up??). We were supposed to go to the old, old penitentiary after, but we were so exhausted from the heat that we bagged it (plus, avoiding jails may be a good habit for Harry to start. Just kidding). The next day, even hotter, we floated the Boise river. The water was very cold but felt great in the heat. We do not have any pics of that because Harry would have gotten the camera wet. St.Louis to Kansas

Now for those up close pictures! At 10:30 in the morning we were waiting in line for the tram up the St.Louis Gateway Arch. When the line was over we were put in a very small tram for a 4 minute ride up to the top. I would definitely NOT recommend this if you are claustrophobic or afraid of heights. Because, at the top of the arch you are 630 feet above ground, this is the tallest man made building in the U.S, and you are filled in a small narrow room with a load of other tourists, like yourself, taking pictures and crowding the windows. But if you are fine with all this, and you manage to get to the windows, the view is amazing. You can also see very clearly the court where the Dread Scott Case was debated. Then you go back down in a 3 minute ride. After our ride down we took more pictures. Then we drove to Salina, Kansas, and past the school where Brown vs the Board of Education took place.
